Thousand Oaks might seem like a sleepy bedroom community, but this city is also famous for a couple of things! Did you for example know that the world’s largest biotech company is located in Newbury Park? Or that Thousand Oaks was named the 7th wealthiest city in America by CBS? You may also not know that there are a huge number of celebrities living in and around Conejo Valley, including Britney Spears, Will Smith, Hulk Hogan, Amanda Bynes, and many others. Another thing people may think of when they hear Thousand Oaks is simply “safety.” Having been rated the 4th safest place in America by the FBI, it may be to no wonder! You probably knew about California Lutheran University (CLU). But did you know this university actually has been rated the 14th best university in the Western United States!? Amgen is the world’s largest biotechnology company and is the biggest employer in the Conejo Valley. Employing more than 7,000 workers, Amgen has total assets of nearly $30 billion. The company specializes in biological chemistry and molecular biology and have hired scientists from throughout the world to come live and work at the international headquarters in Newbury Park. In 2009, Money Magazine ranked Newbury Park as having the 4th highest median household income in the United States ($107,300). In other words, all the communities of Conejo Valley outranks by far the median household incomes of both California ($61,320) and the United States ($55,775). 3. Tour of California
Tour of California returned to Thousand Oaks for the 5th time in 2016, beginning Stage three at Amgen on May 17th, 2016. The Tour of California is officially named the Amgen Tour of California, as Amgen is a main sponsor of the event. The Tour of California is a yearly international event which lasts for eight days. It’s one of America’s most important bicycling tours and a world event broadcasted on television in a number of countries throughout the world. The race covers 650-783 miles, depending on the year, and crisscrosses much of California. Held for the first time in February of 2006, the race was moved to May in 2010 and now runs simultaneously with the Giro d’Italia, another one of the world’s most important cycling races. It is a part of UCI America Tour and from 2017 also a part of the UCI WorldTour Calendar. Besides Thousand Oaks, Tour of California travels through Santa Barbara, wine country, San Diego, redwood forests and along the Pacific Ocean. Participants from a variety of countries take part, including the Netherlands, France, Slovakia, Canada, Italy, Spain, Canada, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Argentina, Great Britain and many other nations. The four Americans winning the race have been Floyd Landis (2006), Levi Leipheimer (2007, 2008 and 2009), Chris Horner (2011) and Tejay van Garderen (2013). The FBI has continuously rated the city among America’s safest, and in 2013, the FBI ranked Thousand Oaks as the 4th safest city in the United States with a population over 100,000 and the safest city in the state with a population over 100,000. And with four homicides taken place since 2010, it might be to no one surprise Thousand Oaks ranks so high. With a homicide rate of 0.8 murders per 100,000 residents for the past ten years, the U.S. murder rate at 6.2/100,000 is over 7 times higher and the California homicide rate at 5.0/100,000 is 6 times higher than the average in T.O. Furthermore, a 2016 report entitled “Safest Cities for Women” by Value Penguin, a financial publication, ranked Thousand Oaks as America’s safest city for women! No crime, great education and health care were all factors evaluated.

Did you hear Britney Spears recently bought a home in Thousand Oaks, joining the large amount of celebrities residing here? While Will Smith lives close by the headquarters of American Luxury Limousine in Westlake Village, many other celebrities live in the Hidden Valley area. Some of the stars living in the Westlake area includes Hulk Hogan, Kim Richards, Heather Locklear and numerous others. Some of the celebrities that have attended Thousand Oaks High School include Justin Bieber, Kim Russell, Colbie Caillat and Michael Richards. Born and raised in T.O., Amanda Bynes also attended this high school, while another celebrity that grew up in the Conejo Valley, Belinda Carisle, attended the Newbury Park High School. Other famous people that were born in Thousand Oaks include Heather Morris from Glee, Hayley Marie Norman and Laura Dotson, amongst others. Although not residents of T.O., celebrities such as Kris Jenner, James Van Der Beek and Tiger Woods love to hang out here. So don’t be surprised if you run into Britney Spears or Will Smith walking their dog or shopping at The Oaks!
